“Wall Colmonoy Ltd has officially opened its new £2.5 million Vacuum Investment Casting facility, marking a significant advancementfor UK aerospace and defence manufacturing and supply chain resilience.”
The launch event, held at the company’s European Headquarters in Pontardawe, exclusively brought together representatives from 38 key organisations, more than 85 industry professionals in total, alongside government stakeholders and project partners, reflecting strong cross-sector support for the initiative.
The facility strengthens the UK’s sovereign manufacturing capability by enabling domestic production of high-integrity components essential to next-generation aerospace and defence systems. Supported by the Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP) and the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), and developed in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce, the project is a clear demonstration of what industry–government partnership can achieve.
Advancing Manufacturing Capability
At the heart of the investment is one of the largest and most advanced commercially available vacuum investment casting furnaces in Europe. Capable of producing components up to 200kg in an oxygen-free environment, the furnace enables the manufacture of ultra-clean, high-performance alloys for the most demanding aerospace and defence applications. This capability, previously accessible only to major global primes, is now commercially available, addressing a critical gap in the UK’s manufacturing landscape and supporting faster, more efficient development of complex components.
Driving Innovation Through Partnership
Collaboration with Rolls-Royce is central to accelerating development cycles for next-generation aerospace components and strengthening the UK’s position within global supply chains. The facility also integrates advanced digital simulation and ‘digital twin’ technologies, enabling engineers to optimise casting processes before production begins – reducing waste, lowering costs, and shortening time to market.
Sustainable, Future-Focused Manufacturing
The VPIC facility supports more sustainable manufacturing practices by enabling the recycling of legacy aerospace materials into high-value alloys for modern applications. Combined with its broader performance and innovation credentials, this positions Wall Colmonoy at the forefront of advanced manufacturing.
Local Impact, National Significance
The opening marks a milestone not only for Wall Colmonoy but for UK manufacturing more broadly. With over 50 years of heritage in Pontardawe, the investment safeguards highly skilled local jobs, creates new advanced engineering opportunities, and reinforces South Wales as a centre of excellence for high-value manufacturing.
Rob Davies, Managing Director of Wall Colmonoy Limited, said: “This is a defining moment for our business and for UK industry. The VPIC facility strengthens our ability to deliver world-class aerospace and defence components while securing critical capability here in the UK.”
Looking Ahead
With a strong development pipeline already in place, the vacuum investment casting facility is set to become a cornerstone of Wall Colmonoy’s UK operations – supporting aerospace, defence, and other high-integrity sectors for years to come.
